Welcome Spartan Strong Families to the 2020-2021 School Year!

“A school year unlike any other.”

For you golf enthusiasts, you might’ve heard a similar phrase uttered by CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz. At various times in his Masters (golf) broadcast, Jim eloquently asserts “The Masters; A tradition unlike any other” when referencing the pristine golf course and storied traditions of Augusta National golf course.

As an avid golfer myself, I spent a few days on the links this summer, and on one particularly steamy morning--while lining up a slippery, right to left twelve footer for par--Jim’s words trickled into my consciousness. Except, this time, his words were astutely describing this upcoming school year (In case you’re interested, I missed the putt too. They make it look so easy on tv…right?).

I think we’d all universally agree: There is no doubt this school year will be unlike any other school year. But, here’s the dangerous part, and where I want to caution all of us--the tendency is to instinctively jump to the conclusion that because it will be unlike any other year, it will be a bad year. This, my friends, is a big mistake and we must fight the urge to automatically presume this will be a ‘double-bogey’ type of year. Why? As with most things in life, it boils down to perspective. While I’ll be the first to admit that I wish I could wave a magic wand and end this pandemic today, there are still many things for all of us to be grateful for. In fact, I’m extremely grateful we will soon have some students filling these hallways with their smiles, joy, and laughter! In fact, if someone would’ve asked me back in March if students would be going back to school in the Fall, I would’ve unequivocally said, “No chance.” The fact that kids are even getting to come to school-albeit part of the time-is a great thing for us all to be thankful for.

As we move forward this school year, my hope is that you’ll join my staff and me in remaining steadfast in thinking & being positive. Being joyfully optimistic and tremendously thankful are phrases I intend on using often to train my brain into seeing the good in every day. And while it isn’t always easy to see, especially on our toughest days, we must be mindful of the many little eyes gazing upon us. Our kiddos need us to lead the way, to be positive, and to be THE calm in the midst of the storm.

To conclude, this school year will certainly be filled with unknowns. However, here’s what I definitely can tell you:

  • The safety of your child and my staff is my main priority. Throughout the year I will diligently monitor and adhere to the state of Ohio’s and our local health department’s recommendations.
  • We are going to love your child. We are going to be there to support them. We will ALWAYS do what’s best for them.
  • We have an awesome staff that have spent their summer preparing to teach in a year of unknowns. I have witnessed firsthand teachers working tirelessly to strengthen their skills in order to provide the best education possible for your student. I am extremely proud of our teachers and staff!
  • Be prepared this school year to go remote (online) at any time. As you know, the COVID world we now find ourselves living in is a very fluid and ever-changing one. At any given point--due to exposure levels/Health Dept. recommendations we might be required to switch to option C--ALL students online.
  • Per HIPPA, if we get a diagnosed case of COVID, we will only be able to inform you that there is a case in our building. We are not permitted to provide any other details. The Health Department will contact you should your student/family need to quarantine.
  •       We are going to be there to support you too. Being a parent in a pandemic is not easy. We know you also have a lot on your plates, thus we will be there to assist and provide you with needed support as you need it.
  • If you have any questions, concerns, or even complaints during this school year,  I am respectfully asking that you please call me FIRST before hitting send on social media. Please afford me the opportunity to provide you clarity. It’s my job and I am more than happy to do so.
  • Grace will be needed from all parties. Teachers will be vigorously doing their best for your child, but a lot of this is new, so please extend some grace as we (myself included) continue to learn and grow with new technology tools. On the flip side of that, we will also extend grace to you as you try to balance work, family, and new school expectations.

We’re in this thing together Spartan Strong community! At some point there will be a vaccine and this will come to an end. In the meantime, let’s remain joyfully optimistic, tremendously thankful, and make the best of  ‘A school year unlike any other’
